The Age of Revolutions and the Making of Brazil
ABSTRACT
This was a conference on the significance—for the kind of society that exists in Brazil today—of the historical episodes that began with the despotic enlightened government of Marques de Pombal in Portugal and ended with the establishment of a liberal monarchy in already independent Brazil in the middle of the nineteenth century. The overall question posed to the conferees was: To what extent did the events that happened in that period are still relevant to understanding Brazil today?
