The Progress of Liberty: Enlightenment, Liberalism, Fin de Siècle
ABSTRACT
This conference explored some of the shifts in understandings of liberty during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This period might be characterized as one in which liberty found itself in a variety of crises, as the legacies of the Glorious and French Revolutions made themselves felt politically, and as many of the moral limitations upon personal autonomy eroded.
