ABSTRACT
This conference focused on changing conceptions of liberty in America as presented in the Founding Era newspaper debate between Publius, author of The Federalist, and Brutus, a leading Anti-Federalist; the antebellum senate debate between nationalist Daniel Webster and rights advocate Robert Hayne; and wide-ranging debates between Stephen A. Douglas and Abraham Lincoln in the 1858 Illinois senate election.
