History

Liberty and Authority in the Feudal Era in Hume’s “History of England”

ABSTRACT

This conference explored the first two volumes of David Hume's History of England; the period from William the Conqueror to Henry V, with special attention to the establishment and role of Magna Carta and the beginnings of constitutional monarchy. It raised themes, such as limited government, in Hume's History of England that were to be further illuminated by a select number of Hume's political essays.
